The Fencing Problem - Mathematics :: Math Coursework Mathematics

The Fencing Problem Introduction ============ I have been given 1000 meters of fencing and my aim is to find out the maximum area inside. ====================================================================== Prediction ---------- I would predict that the more sides the shape has, then possibly the bigger the area it will have, although I have nothing to base this on, it will be what I am about to investigate. Shapes: I am going to start with the rectangle, I think this is a good starting block because I am able to vary the widths and lengths to see which has the bigger area. If I discover that the rectangles with equal sides i.e. square bring me the best result, then I will try to direct my investigation into furthering that particular theory. Rectangles ---------- [IMAGE] Area = 40 000 m2 ================ [IMAGE] Area = 60 000 m2 [IMAGE] Area = 62 500 m2 It appears that the square shape has a bigger area, I would possibly say that this is because the square has two bigger numbers, which are multiplied together to give a greater number than when a big number is multiplied with a smaller number. However, I cannot take this for granted and I think using one more shape will be useful in order to back up my theory. [IMAGE] Area = 52 500m This proves my theory regarding squares and I shall now put my results into a graph to show what I have found. Length (m) Width (m) Area (m) 400 100 40 000 300 200 60 000 250 250 62 500 150 350 52 500 I will now further my investigation by looking at shapes of a different nature: [IMAGE] Regular Pentagon ---------------- The regular pentagon has 5 sides, and as we get 1000m of fencing, this means each side will be 200m (1000Â ¸5=200).

Explore the dramatic significance Essay

This scene takes place a few weeks after Marco and Rodolfo are first introduced into the play. The last scene has a climatic ending with recognition of apparent sexual attraction between Rodolfo and Catherine. In this scene, it appears that the two young characters have developed a liaison and intimacy, much to Eddie’s chagrin. This selected scene reveals to the audience not only the development of a romance between Rodolfo and Catherine but also the start of the deterioration of Eddie and Beatrice’s relationship as a result of Eddie’s affection for Catherine. The scene like many within the play, is introduced by Alfieri who pronounces: â€Å"Eddie Carbone never expected to have a destiny† (P22) thereby implying Eddie’s imminent downfall, similar to other protagonists found in Greek tragedies. However, as this is a modern tragedy, no one character is particularly corrupt. Indeed, they are just ordinary people. As confirmed in Alfieri’s speech as he asserts: â€Å"A man works, raises his family, goes bowling†¦ † (P22) Yet even inconsequential individuals can have extraordinary lives, and Miller encapsulates this in the play through the perceptive Chorus of Alfieri. Marco and Rodolfo who arrived at the Carbone household a few weeks prior to events occurring in this scene, are beginning to sense Eddie’s distress. During this introductory meeting Eddie generates a disliking for Rodolfo, which the audience realize, as a result of the magnetism between his niece and Rodolfo. He begins to only address Marco deliberately excluding Rodolfo from his conversation. Towards the end of this scene, Rodolfo and Catherine begin openly flirting, and in the background Eddie is seen with â€Å"his face puffed with trouble,†(P22) illustrating to the audience his future anxieties and jealousy in the play. Alfieri opens the scene, acting similarly to the chorus in a Greek tragedy. He comments upon the action whilst also instilling ideas into the audience’s mind. Being a lawyer, the audience regard him as a good judge of character. This is illustrated when he ends his speech with, â€Å"Now, as the weeks passed, there was a future, there was a trouble that would not go away. â€Å"(P22) Hence the audience will be awaiting the scene, hoping to find out what more danger lies ahead for this disillusioned protagonist, Eddie Carbone. Being the Chorus, Alfieri never leaves the stage, the lights dim or come up at his desk but he remains as judge over Eddie’s actions. The only other characters on the stage are Eddie and Beatrice. At the start of the scene, Eddie is standing at the doorway of the house anxiously waiting for Catherine and Rodolfo to return home from the cinema. Beatrice enters from the street, she is about to enter the house when Eddie talks to her. Miller gives many stage directions at this point as he knows exactly how he wants the scene to play out. The tension in which this scene begins is indicative of what is about to happen. Miller employs Eddie, his tragic hero, in this scene. It becomes obvious as to what his fatal flaw is. The role of Eddie is directed to be aggressive in order to attempt to conceal his inner anguish. Eddie â€Å"looks away† from Beatrice several times during their encounter, suggesting that he is ashamed of his feelings and obsession. His actions also reflect his growing disinterest in Beatrice, his wife, which mixed with his expanding interest in their niece creates a highly complex and dangerous situation. Nonetheless, Beatrice acts as the good wife and â€Å"smiles† at him when she catches sight of him. Despite this, Eddie looks away which emphasizes tension as it illuminates that there is some unease on Eddie’s part. Beatrice then continues to try and keep the mood light whilst avoiding the words she would have liked to say about her husband’s inappropriate affections. Miller directs her role to be more assertive causing the tension to rise further as what she is saying puts Eddie in a increasingly awkward state. Miller’s range of language devices in the play effectively bring out both character and theme. Alfieri’s language includes the dialogue spoken by an educated man critically aware of the tragic situation that is unraveling: â€Å"Who can ever know what will be discovered? † Miller thereby creates curiosity in the audience through his use of interrogative as well as a sympathetic response to Eddie who by now no longer can control his emotions. That said, Beatrice and Eddie speak in the simple dialect of the Italian American community, â€Å"You crazy or sump’m? † Beatrice (P23). Suggesting that she does not have the capacity to articulate her worries. In this section, Eddie refers to Rodolfo as ‘That’ several times; the absence of pronouns suggest that Eddie does not see Rodolfo as a person, more of a problem or obstacle which he has to overcome to save Catherine. The derogative language also implies sub-human, a reference to an animal, ergo proving that he deems Rodolfo as inadequate and displaying his hostility towards him. Ultimately, Eddie craves to convince Beatrice that Rodolfo is homosexual through facts like Rodolfo blonde and that male singers lack masculinity. Beatrice recognizes Eddie’s suggestions. In the stage directions, Miller writes that, ‘She realizes †¦ a campaign solidified in him. ‘ and as a result she takes a stand telling him, â€Å"Ain’t gonna start nothin’ here. † (P23) Her anger behind Eddie’s innuendos come from her realization of his jealousy as well as the fact that Eddie has not, as was case in 1940’s, fully understood what it is to be homosexual.

Tobacco Consumption Is The Biggest Culprit Of Preventable...

It is widely claimed that tobacco consumption is the biggest culprit of preventable death, which is responsible for more than 6 million of mortality worldwide per year, reported by the Centers of Diseases Control and Prevention (CDC). Recent research of CDC in 2015 also predicted that smoking in particular will be the cause of 8 million deaths annually by 2030. Such current trends prompt many nations to enact laws restricting the harvesting, distributing and selling tobacco products. One striking example is that in 2010, Bhutan became the first non-smoking country by imposing a nationwide tobacco products ban. According to that, all the acts of tobacco production, distribution and consumption were forbidden, otherwise the violators would†¦show more content†¦Furthermore, not only does it involve several environmental problems that we have to confront, but also plays an essential role in developing the United States economy. The implementation and enforcement of the anti-toba cco laws of America are central to such major issues of the nation’s standards of living, economic growth and social welfare. In the following points. I will examine the mentioned aspects and some considerable oppositions. To begin with, the first possible explanation for tightening anti-tobacco policies is that tobacco use has a detrimental effect on the users individually. In fact, the smokers jeopardize themselves by absorbing poisonous substances, which are active when ones are smoking. For instance, the chemicals in cigarettes include some in removers such as acetic acid and arsenic. The former is used to remove nail polish and hair dye, whereas the latter can be found in rat poison. Furthermore, methanol, tar and carbon monoxide, which are usually in vehicles’ released fumes, will be active in the smoker’s windpipe and lungs while he or she smokes. It is ironic, but literally the people who smoke are fumigating their respiratory system. Due to such poisonous chemicals, having a regular smoking habit will run higher risks of circulatory, respiratory and mental diseases.

Reaching For Dreams - A Ballet From Rehearsal To Opening Night Essays

Reaching for Dreams - A Ballet from Rehearsal to Opening Night In watching a professional ballet one doesn't realize how much work is put into making the production come to life. Both the dancers and the choreographers put every ounce of energy and emotion into telling their story. It takes years for a ballerina to train for the labor that goes into becoming professional, however just weeks to learn a full-length ballet. Dancers can sometimes be put through months of sore muscles in order to train. Often ballet dancers are told to loose weight in order to look their part, or are only given a few minutes for break after hours of vigorous training. In the end it is all worth it though. When I checked out Reaching for Dreams: A Ballet from Rehearsal to Opening Night, by Susan Kuklin out of the library I expected to read another boring drawn out diary. Amazingly this book was difficult for me to put down because I became so enthralled by the process of putting on a ballet. At the beginning of this book the author describes the dancers coming in on a rainy Monday morning to begin warm-ups and rehearsal. This of course is the beginning of their voyage to opening night. The dancers taking part in this production were from the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre. The ballet that they plan to perform in seven weeks is called ?Speeds.? The choreographer of ?Speeds? is a world-renowned woman by the name of Jennifer Mullers. This production contains a cast of eleven dancers and five alternates. ?Speeds? is a modern ballet that explains how one moment in time is like no other, and how often things in the world change. Throughout this book, Kuklin observes the life of a dancer. The typical day of a professional ballerina at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre consists of waking up around seven to be at rehearsal in plenty of time to warm-up. In dance warming up your muscles is the most important device to do before beginning, as it helps you stay clear of any possible injuries. After warming up Jennifer, the choreographer, teaches them the dance and makes sure that every move ?flows? with the body of the person dancing it. She claims that ?the dancers must be comfortable with the shapes that they dance.? After hours of strenuous practice the dancers receive a five-minute break to cool off and grab a bite to eat. Normally the meal the dancers would eat on break would consist of some fruit and maybe a small sandwich. Jennifer would then announce ?Okay breaks over?, and the worn out bodies would slowly, but surely get up and dance their hearts out until about one o'clock when they were allowed to l eave. Often times some of the duets would stay after to rehearse more to make sure that everything was flowing together as if they were one. After seven months of doing this everyday one would think that it would become extremely repetitious, however to the leads, opening night is well worth the wait. Bright red curtains wave as the dancers file in back stage for the first showing of ?Speeds? to start. The dancers are costumed in pure white linen to bring you the feeling of innocence. Everyone is extremely apprehensive about the show as the music begins to play and the curtains begin to be drawn open. Jennifer whispers one last good luck to the group as they begin to perform. The show goes on wonderfully and nothing unexpected happens for the next few showings. The last night of the show comes very quickly to the dancers as if it has all been a dream. The show ends and the dancers come out on stage for their last bow. As they look out into the audience and see the crowd cheering they realize what the seven months of stressful practicing was for. For the chance to get the feeling of a lifetime that you will never forget, and to feel that you have achieved something wonderful.
